The municipality of Muskiz has a surface of 21,50 km2. There is located in the Vale of Somorrostro, in the part more northwest of the Historical Territory of Biscay. Cantabrico limits to the North with sea, to the east with Abanto and Ziérbena and Ziérbena, on the West with Cantabria and on the South with the municipalities of Galdames and Sopuerta (Encartaciones).


The basin of the Barbadún is during the Top Paleolithic territory of development of a human group who was living of the hunting and the compilation and had his basic camp in the Arenaza cave.
The most ancient remains found in Muskiz belong to a period very later, so called Eneolítico-Bronce, and that ends mend to of the IV - IIIrd millenium B.C.

Until the IXth century there is a big documentary gap. In the chronicle of Alfonso III, c. 880, they informs that his predecessor Alfonso I repopulated Carranza and Sopuerta. The first written document in which he arranges to meet to the vale of Somorrostro, of which Muskiz is an only one part, is dating in 1068.

Muskiz, like the rest of the Historical Territory of Biscay, to was finding in the Cantabrian cornice it has a climate mesotérmico, moderated as for the temperatures and very rainy.
